VIVA YOUNG LEADERS DISCOVERY WORKSHOP ©
From my interactions with university students, I find that they tend to emphasize academic success over their personal development. Many of them are very bright intellectually but could do better developing critical competencies to be well-positioned for success in the working world. I know this well from over two decades of training and nurturing organisational leaders and talents locally and globally.
There is numerous research that supports that effective self-management enhances leadership capabilities:
1. Self-Leadership and Performance: A study published in SAGE Open found that self-leadership positively influences knowledge-sharing behavior and business performance, suggesting that individuals who effectively manage themselves contribute more significantly to organizational success.
2. Emotional Intelligence (EI): Harvard Business School highlights that leaders with high EI—encompassing self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills—are better equipped to coach teams, manage stress, deliver feedback, and collaborate effectively.
3. Transformational Leadership: Research in the Frontiers in Psychology journal indicates that transformational leaders, who often exhibit strong self-management skills, enhance followers' perceptions of goal importance and attainability, leading to improved job attitudes and proactive behaviors.
Research also underscores the importance of specific competencies that enable university students to excel academically and emerge as effective leaders:
• Core Competencies and Academic Performance: A study published in BMC Medical Education examined the impact of core competencies on university students' academic performance and career preparation. The research identified six core competencies: skill reinforcement, leadership and teamwork, globalization, problem-solving, self-management, and communication. The study found that these competencies significantly influence students' academic success and readiness for future careers.
• Student Leadership Competencies: The Student Leadership Competencies framework emphasizes the development of skills such as self-awareness, communication, critical thinking, and teamwork. Integrating these competencies into academic curricula has been shown to enhance students' leadership abilities and academic achievement.
• 21st Century Skills: The concept of 21st-century skills encompasses abilities like critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and adaptability. These skills are essential for academic success and leadership in the modern world.
Based on research as well as my own experience and I have identified and defined 12 Critical Competencies for University Students©
